For about a year now I've been trying to find a picture I saw a few years ago!
It's a group of either 5 or seven men. At least two are sitting at a table. There is a document, either held by one of the men sitting or on the table. But the memorable thing about the picture was the light. On the table ( I think) was a candle which was the only illumination, but beautifuuly painted as it caught the faces. For some reason I think the picture is something to do with a plot or conspiracy.
Can anyone think who might have painted it, or if they can point me in the right direction to find it?

Mon, November 28, 2005 - 10:00 AMDo you remember anything about the men's clothing, Bobs? This might be a useful clue as to the period the picture was painted in.

This immediately suggests Georges de La Tour to me, as the single candle throwing light upwards was a favored means of illumination in his paintings. But the only La Tour picture I can recall that deals with a theme similar to what you suggest, 'The Paying of the Dues', doesn't quite fit with the scenario you've detailed. I've loaded it to the Tribe gallery though-just in case it's the one you're thinking of. -

Re: Can anyone help?
Mon, November 28, 2005 - 9:20 PMThe single candle illuminating figures was pretty common and started in the Baroque period. It would be difficult to pinpoint.

Wed, November 30, 2005 - 7:57 PMPerhaps Rembrandt's unfinished "The Conspiracy of Julius Civilis?" Hmmm...probably not if there was just one candle.
I'll keep thinking. -

Re: dutch masters mystery
Thu, December 1, 2005 - 2:06 PMHmm, nothing like a bit of detective work to distract one from the day's duties. Can you remember any of the following details?
1. Were any of the figures looking out at the viewer?
1A. If so, was it a single figure, a few, a majority, or all?
2. Were all the figures male? Only some?
3. Were the figures secular, or was the setting derived from biblical scenarios?
Jog any memories so far? If not, then we've the more tricky task of highlighting or eliminating artists based on their overall style- which isn't to say your mystery painting couldn't have been an exception to the artist's regular trends.
So it basically looks like we're leaning towards the Dutch.
But Rembrandt's chairoscuro was often done without the visual device of placing a candle in the frame. Like Vermeer, his light sources tend to come from windows or portals, or are remeniscent of modern studio lighting, suffusing the subject from a point off-frame. Same goes for Caravaggio. This makes them less likely suspects, although your description immediately made me think of Rembrandts "The Sydics of the Cloth Guild".
If the candle is central to your memory of the painting then La Tour is a more likely suspect as Marie rightly points out. Van Honthorst also used the pinpoint effect of candles, though his work trends strongly towards the religious. Anyone know more about these two?

Re: dutch masters mystery
Thu, December 1, 2005 - 9:59 PMLest we forget Gentileschi, who also used a single candle for illumination.

Re: dutch masters mystery
Sat, December 10, 2005 - 8:52 AMI've been trying to recall the details/.
As far as I can remember, all the figures were male. I think one of them was fairly young, probably late teens. The clothing was sombre colours and I can't remember the period of dress though. I don't think it was a biblical scenario, and from memory, the figures focus of attention was a pice of paper, though maybe not all were looking at it. I don't think any were looking at the viewer, but I may be wrong. It's several years since I saw it and I wish now I'd jotted down some info about it!

Sat, December 10, 2005 - 6:46 PMNo, that one has no paper, is arranged like a traditional Last Supper, and has Christ pointing up to his own spirit appearing above them.

Re: Can anyone help?
Tue, December 13, 2005 - 1:20 PMWhere did you see it? If in a gallery, they will have past exhibitions. If you saw it in a book, you can get another copy. If you saw it in the library, then you can revisit the library and from memory retrace your steps. What was the time frame of the art? Who are the artists you are interested in? What style are they active in? What school or art do they practice? Was it an Italian painter, a French? In what style of dress were the men attired? What were you thinking about at the time, which may have influenced you to imagine things in the painting that weren't actually there? Peruse famous artist's work whose works might replicate in style what you saw. -

Re: Can anyone help?
Wed, December 14, 2005 - 1:25 AMI've perused many famous artists works and googled all the key words I can think of always drawing a blank.
I actually saw it on an art programme, but I can't remember the name of the programme, who presented it or which channel it was on. -

Anything to trigger you
Wed, December 14, 2005 - 3:03 AMDo you remember the time (evening or night), day, week, month, year? What are the art programs you know of? What channels do you watch? Was it university related? Corporate supported? What were you doing at home when you saw it? Did you have an event to go to? What was the weather like? Did someone special call you that evening? Did you tell someone about it the next day? Did someone else watch it with you? Did you comment about it to them? What did you have for dinner that night? What were you wearing? Was your hair messy? We're you expecting guests? Picture the room? Remember the commentary as the description was given? Remember the narrator's voice, male or female? Had you two beers or three? Was the carpet clean or dirty? Were the drapes open? Was the refrigerator full? Were the dishes washed? Did you take the garbage out? What were the projects you were working on at the time? Did you describe this work to someone in an e-mail? Do you remember who? Can you write them? Can they/you look back at those e-mail that might contain the mention and note the date it was sent? And so on.

Wed, December 14, 2005 - 11:10 AMI think that one key thing that we need to know to narrow it down big time is the clothes they were wearing. Also the way the figures were depicted.
so:
-greco-roman clothing?
-Were they in harmonious ratio or were they modern/more realistic? -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.Unsu...

Re: Anything to trigger you
Wed, December 14, 2005 - 11:59 AMThe clothing was probably around 15th/16th centuary-ish, but wouldn't swear to it. I seem to remember they were fairly sombre colours. And the figures were more 'arranged' than particularly natural.
I've tried remembering other details of the evening and have to admit I've drawn a blank. -

Re: Anything to trigger you
Thu, December 15, 2005 - 12:08 AMThe clothes are too elaborate and colourful and the room cannot really be seen as it is in virtual darkeness... the candlelight not penetrating to the walls. -
-
Re: Anything to trigger you
Thu, December 15, 2005 - 8:09 AMHm, I think that rules out many of the Itallian Baroque artists. Carravaggio liked to have his figures in "plain" dress. I'm leaning toward Dutch-realism like many people here, although the room not being completely visible would rule out many of them as well. -

Thu, December 15, 2005 - 12:54 PMHm, pre-Raphealites is an interesting possibility. Unfortunately, I don't know a whole lot about the movement aside formt he obvious Rapheal influence.
Neo-Classicism might be a possibility as well. -
