I am a part of a tribe called "People that still beleive in love". So recently the mediator wanted images uploaded. I thought about it and contributed these:
Allegory of the outbreak of war
Raft of the medusa
Beta Beatrix, Rosetti
Burial of Atala
Laocoon
The diptych of Melun (Agnes Sorel's panel)
After reflecting on those choices for a while, I decided to look for an art history tribe. I am SO glad to see there is one! I'm also very excited to engage in this forum.

Re: New tribe member
Wed, November 16, 2005 - 5:55 PMWell, lets just take the first one. Allegory of the outbreak of war. We see that the right hand side Mars the god of destruction (marked with blood stained sword and sheild) is taking the husband away to the underworld... death... war. and the grasped hands of the lovers And on the other side is Venus (in my opinion) is aiding the maden in her futile fight to keep the lovers together... also marked with the angels holding the lady.
Further, if you look to the lower right hand, there is a lady holding a lute. Well, it's broken. The Lute has symbolized harmony. Since it's broken - I feel that harmony can not exist with war.
That's just Rueben's Allegory of the Outbreak of War.
I have to go back to work - I'll write more later. But nice question. :) Anyone else want to do one? -

Re: New tribe member
Wed, November 16, 2005 - 6:29 PMHm, well, the Laocoon depicts the seuthe-sayer (forgot the name) and his sons being dragged down into the sea by two serpents because he angered the gods by warning them about the Trojan horse. The Trojans believed this to be punishment from Venus, if I recall. Is that how you derive love from this work? The death of a man from the presumed insult of the goddess of love, when in relaity, he was acting out of passion for his own people? -
