Who do you like more? And why? What are your fav Baroque painters or painting?

New to the site.....I'm not a historian...just a fine art student in Florence studying a Baroque style of painting (eventually once I finish drawing in charcoal in another year I hope).....I want to learn more about art history and explore the past to learn from to paint in the future..

ciao

Carvaggio. The reason? As expected, it's the man's sense of light. It just glows off the canvas, highlighting the major points of the pieces. A close second would be Gentlieschi. One of my favorite pieces she did was Judith and her maid after decapitating Holofernes. They are sneaking out of the tent, illuminated by a single candle. The scene is so tense, it's greta.

Artemesia Gentileschi !!!! (I always do that when Carvaggio comes up :) Under-appreciated goddess. Perfect example; the piece you just referenced, compare it to Carvaggio's of the same subject. My own personal opinion (and this is just opinion). Gentileschi just chokes me in the heart and in the gut!

Disgusting and screwed up!??!? It was totally dramatic, or rather they were, she did more than one.

Have you seen Caravaggios? I love his art but his impression of this woman and the moment was that of a weak accident perpetrated by a naieve woman.

Artemesia imparted a woman who took care of business. No nonsense, hold the bastard down, chop it off, put it in a basket and get the hell out of there.

Have you ever seen a ren painting/sculpture or whathaveyou of a heroic man who looked like he was a frightened wimp who had no idea what he was doing? I mean even the benign David by Michaelangelo has had feirceness and resolve projected on to him. Bernini's David is much more dynamic.

I get that women were really restricted back then, but that's part of what is so fantastic about Artemesia. She painted in spite of that, and she got screwed by many of her so-called patrons. I have several copies of letters she wrote, begging for payment of paintings she had already sent.

Have you ever heard the inspiration behind her painting those paintings?

        *grinz*

caravaggio... he is the VERY FIRST film maker...

    he truly understood god

if you see carefully... C's painting performs its aesthetics/theology it its entirety...

why paint when u can photograph? perhaps you should ask that question instead... if you cannot see how great either of these painter are does it matter who is better?

aesthetics knows no time period... they are but constructs of man... aesthetics is timeless... thus rendering art history useless... just that art historian dun like to admit it... else they will all be out of a job...

    cheers

I think that Caravaggio was very successful at portraying divinity with light but I really wouldn't say that he "knew God." I don't think he could care less about religious subjects but rather painted them out of necessity. If you read his biography, it kind of tells you he's not really the God loving type. I think the Catholic church just wanted him to paint stuff to make it look good and to help the "Counter Reformation." His religious paintings tended to have little innuendos in which he was able to make fun of the declining Catholic church. Caravaggio's ideas really come out later in his mannerist works.

i have read all of his biographies... inside out.. outside in... they all say the same things... all from a very similar source... so it is quite redundent to read more... unless of course u can read italian and go straight to the source... but if you are reading english... one is as good as the other...

i would disagree... if you really understand his painting... you would know why he know GOD... look at his "basket of fruits"... it is one of his BEST works... if i had the money... it would be the one painitng i would collect from him...

he might be just a painter for the cardinal... but his spirituality exceeds that any of the priests... his paintings does not portray divinity... his paintings performs it... he is performing concepts of infinity within the finite confines of his paintings

by 1600 circa... his ideas were already fully matured... his mannerist works were not as good... in his later years he was going down a slippery slide... he peaked just when he entered the cardinal service... esp his conterelli chapel works....

Photo or Paint Bcuz U love it. plain and simple. Now as 4 great Baroque painters, The top woman is A.G. 4 sure top man C.(uh Carvaggio) To often we don't truely connect with the time as 2 'spirit/god/saintlyness. Yes 4 his time, without the option of photography, a painters with the ability 2 capture such beautiful images one had 2B seen as somewhat of a 'BLESSING?"
