X-rays

Suppose one wanted to get a painting x-rayed to reveal underpainting, etc., but did not work at a major museum or university. How does one get access to the necessary equipment and expertise? I assume that the x-ray equipment is not the same as that used in doctors' offices -- am I wrong?
